Wellhaven column: Promoting active lifestyles and independence
Wellhaven is integrated to accommodate both independent and assisted living — and designed to promote independence and active lifestyles. With a strong history in our community, Wellhaven has been the choice of housing for those who want to stay active and independent. Our focus is on individual wellness. Wellhaven is a Wisconsin state-licensed Residential Care Apartment Complex with a variety of apartment options and levels of care available to our tenants. Our tenants live in a community that cares about them. We have had many groups volunteer to put smiles on the faces of our tenants. Wellhaven is a part of The Lutheran Home Association, a Christian-based organization. We have been very thankful to the local churches like the First Covenant Church and their youth group, and Faith Lutheran Church for stopping in to do some caroling. Thank you to all that have stopped in to create smiles.
Our own Pastor Mann shares devotion about the Christmas season: "The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." (Philippians 4:5b-6)
The Seabees are a branch of the U.S. Navy. They build roads, airbases and all sorts of things. Their official motto is "We build, we fight," but their unofficial motto is "Can do." That can be the motto for Jesus. At Christmas, we celebrate that God has come near to us. He did what we couldn't do. He took our place, paid our price, forgave our sins, shed his blood and gave us peace. To achieve all this, he was the only one who said "Can do."
We also celebrate Christmas because God still comes near to us. Sometimes, we are similar to little kids alone in a dark room. They may be afraid of the dark, what do they do? He or she will begin to cry and who comes to help? Either Mom or Dad and everything changes. But, really nothing changes. The room is still dark, but due to the presence of Mom or Dad, everything is different. Our world is dark. It will remain dark because of the prince of darkness, sin and everything bad. Sometimes it's scary and we may cry, if we were young children.
But there is Jesus, and just like mom and dad, he steps in and he is part of our world. Nothing's changed in a sense, but everything's changed. Our world is still dark, but Jesus promises to be with us. The lord is near.
He lives up to his prophetic name "Immanuel," which means "God is with us." He comes to make our hearts his manger through baptism. As we hear his word, his spirit pours himself into us. In holy communion we join so close as to be one with his body and blood. We're not alone. The lord is near.
