Auran, Castellano WIAC Scholar-Athletes
University of Wisconsin-River Falls' Amy Auran and Isaac Castellano have been named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Scholar-Athletes for their respective sports.
Auran, a senior from International Falls, Minn., has been named the recipient of the 2018 WIAC Judy Kruckman Women's Ice Hockey Scholar-Athlete Award, while Castellano, a junior from Auburndale, has been named co-winner of the WIAC's Max Sparger Scholar Athlete Award for men's basketball.
Auran is majoring in elementary education with a minor in professional writing and coaching and maintains a 3.76 grade point average. She is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and has been recognized on UW-River Falls' Dean's List numerous semesters. Auran is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society.
A team captain this season, she has helped the Falcons win the WIAC regular-season championship four consecutive years and O'Brien Cup titles in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Auran was a member of the UW-River Falls teams that finished as the national runner-up in 2016 and third-place finisher in 2015. She received her team's Hardest Worker Award for the 2015-16 campaign.
Auran is a member of UW-River Falls' Hall of Fame Selection Committee and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee — serving as secretary during the 2016-17 academic year. She has volunteered for: Trick-or-Treat For Canned Goods; BRIDGE for Community Life; Love Your Melon; Youth Frontiers Kindness Retreat; trash pick-up; and local youth athletics. She is a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard.
Auran is the second straight Falcon to earn the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award, joining Emily Stark in 2016-17.
Castellano is majoring in biology education with a minor in chemistry and sustains a 3.91 grade point average. He was a NABC Honors Court Member in 2016-17 and was part of two Falcon squads that received a Team Academic Award from the NABC. Castellano is a two-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and been recognized on UW-River Falls' Dean's List and Honor Roll numerous semesters.
As team captain a year ago, he helped UW-River Falls secure the WIAC regular-season and tournament titles. Castellano received the Falcons' Teammate of the Year Award in 2016 and 2017.
He is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society and UW-River Falls' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Castellano has volunteered with Feed My Starving Children, Habitat For Humanity and the Salvation Army.
Castellano is the first UWRF men's basketball player to receive the Max Sparger Scholar Athlete award since Kent Becker in 2001-02.
